Crappie fishing on Cedar Creek Lake - May 17, 2025

Crappie fishing on Cedar Creek Lake - May 17, 2025

The Club will be repeating its guided fishing trip for Crappie with BigCrappie.com. Cedar Creek Lake is about an hour SE of Dallas. They know exactly where to find the fish so the action should be fast. The daily limit is 25! BigCrappie.com provides the fully equipped boat, guide, rods/reels, tackle, bait, bottled water and cleaning/bagging of keepers. Crappie are great fun to catch and really good eating!

This is an afternoon trip so no need to get up with the chickens. We will meet our guide at the Huddle House restaurant in Gun Barrell City at 12:30. The fishing is from 1:00 to 5:00. Then they fillet and package our fish. Bring a cooler and ice to take them home. We have reserved one boat with 4 anglers. A young child or 2 can fit in as well. This is a great trip for families! The cost for adults (12 and over) is $225. Kids under 12 are $75.

Water to drink is included. Bring any other drinks that you want. A License, sun screen, and a hat are advised too.

Tickets are nonrefundable unless BigCrappie.com cancels because of weather or the Club is able to resell your ticket.

If the demand for this trip is high we will look to add additional boats. For more information contact Warrren Petersen at 214-384-6237 or wpetersen929@gmail.com.

Prairie Dog Hunt

Prairie Dog Hunt

Prairie dog shooting is about the most fun you can have while shooting. Envision "Wack a Mole" with a rifle. The Club has sponsored these before and everyone had a great time. Jim Shepherd the coordinator of this hunt for the Club has shot dogs with this same outfitter several times and is back for more.

We will travel to the Panhandle or Eastern New Mexico for lots of shooting! The current plan is to drive out Friday morning, May 30, with hunting planned for Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Our guide will scout the area and determine which of several ranches we will hunt, and the best town to stay in.  For the moment, plan on Logan, NM, which is 7 hours from Dallas. This is subject to change, if the hunting is better elsewhere.

Cost is $350.00 per shooter for two days of shooting.  Once the exact location is picked we will find lodging nearby. Each hunter will pay for their own room and meals.

Prairie dogs are about 2 to 3 times the size of a squirrel so you don’t need a big caliber. Shots will normally be from 100 to 300 yards depending on the size of the “town”. An idea rifle is a .223 AR, which gives instant follow up shots. On a shoot in 2020 one of our members shot 250 rounds the first morning with that weapon. Any of the fast .22s would be good. A semi auto is best but bolt guns work too.

If we hunt in NM, you will need a NM non-game hunting license which you can buy online. Nongame species include prairie dogs, rabbits, ground squirrels, coyotes, skunks and Himalayan tahr. You can purchase your license at https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/ The cost of the nonresident non game license is $65. If you have hunted in NM before you will have a Customer ID. The website gives you a chance to recover it, if you don’t know it. Hunter Ed requirements apply in NM too.

White River Fishing - Cotter, AR October 9 - 13, 2025

White River Fishing - Cotter, AR October 9 - 13, 2025

Summary: Back by popular demand the Club will return to the White River for some of the best trout fly fishing available. The trip includes 4 nights of lodging, 1 ½ days of guided fishing, and 1 ½ days on your own. During that free time you can book more time with the guides, rent a boat and fish on your own, wade fish in front of our house, or just chill out.

Fishing with Guides: Our stretch of the White River is legendary with many anglers.  Large brown trout (20+ inchers) along with plentiful rainbows that love to jump are common to White River fishing trips.  Our chief fishing guide, Taylor Wooten with Flippin Fly Guides, and his guides are some of the nicest and best you will find on the river.  Fishing with the guides will be done from boats with plenty of room for casting without getting tangled in trees.  There are unique opportunities for dry fly, streamer, and nymph fishing on this river.  Guided fishing will be mostly catch and release to preserve this magnificent tailwater fishery.

Guided fly fishing is included within our package price for 1 1/2 days.  The remaining 1 1/2 days are considered your flex time on the river.  You can choose to pair up with another member and rent a boat and motor, a canoe, or a kayak then proceed fishing the river as self-guided.  Optionally you may choose to wade or bank fish a variety of places, and our guides can direct you to spots where this can be done safely. If you choose to explore beyond the White River, the nearby Norfork River is one of the true jewels of the Ozarks.  Only about 5 miles long before it flows into the White River, this river is known for the best place to catch a trout slam – all 4 species of trout: Brook, Brown, Cutthroat, and Rainbow.  Your flex time, boat and other rentals can be arranged and paid directly to nearby resorts by you and your fishing partner.   We will have a list but you are on your own for the rental.

More Fishing with the Guides: You can extend your time with the guides for part or all of the last 1 ½ days. They require two anglers per boat. The cost is $200 per person for a ½ day and $275 per person for a full day. Coordinate this with Julio by September 5th, who will reserve the guides. You will pay this directly to the guides with a check made out to Flippin Fly Guides.

Fly Rods & Tackle are provided for your use at no extra charge with all guided trips, or you can use your own.  Bring your own fly fishing equipment for all self guided ventures.  Don’t forget waders this time of year if you choose to wade.

Lodging is provided at a premium house on the White River.  We have reserved this same house on previous trips.  It has a full kitchen, dining area, large lounging area and large deck overlooking the backyard and river.  Our spacious yard on the river has a fire pit making for a nice evening.  The house features 8 comfortable beds and 3 nice bathrooms.  This house is next to Wildcat Shoals.  Generally, our guides were able to launch their boats and pick us up in our backyard. Wildcat Shoals is one of the most popular spots on the river for launching boats and wade fishing. Some of the biggest browns have been caught on the banks of this area of the river. Wade fishing in this area remains relatively easy with few obstacles.

Meals are not included in the ticket price and will be determined by the group.  One option could be that each dinner is prepared by a pre-determined pair of anglers who sign up for that meal.  Another option is local restaurants. Lunch is provided by guides with full day trips.

Arrival is on Thursday, October 9th and departure on Monday, October 13th.  The address in Cotter AR will be provided as will directions.

Cost & Deposit: The core trip price is $675 per person and includes guide fees for 1 1/2 days and lodging for 4 nights.  A deposit of $300 is due with registration. The balance of $375 is due September 5, 2025. If you wish to fish with a guide more than 1 1/2 days, the extra cost will be $200 per person, for a 1/2 day and $275 for a full day, with minimum 2 anglers per boat.

Fishing licenses may be purchased online at: agfc.com/en/  (select resources, licensing, fishing license)  A 3 day license is a must have and you can double up if you plan to fish more than 3 days  Whether you are a seasoned fly fisher looking for a new challenge or a beginner who has never touched a fly rod this is a great trip for you.

If you have questions, please reach out to Julio Morales at juliomorales@verizon.net  or (214) 557-3839.
